Is my art original?
This question is big and important for everyone who starts their art journey. Answers will include: it is original if it comes from your head only, it is original if you paint from real life, it is original if it is only your idea. The reality is whatever we do, see, visualize we only visualize from what we have already seen. Who has created what we have already seen? You have your answer to that. So on one hand, nothing is original because we are expressing what is around us whether it is an abstract work or a real-life work. At the same time, …Everything is original.
How about a copy of a painting? If you focus on copies, you are going to block your creative flow. My concern is that people who are great at copies rarely do their own work. They almost disappear as individualities in the process of creating copies and mastering the skills and geniuses of others. I feel it is better to learn some aspects from others but not live your artistic life by creating copies of other people’s work.
To simplify, if you see a photograph you like, feel free to paint or draw the photograph. You can also use just one element from the image and create an environment for that element on your canvas. First look or real-life drawing is always the best. You will learn so much when you practice drawing or painting from real life.
Remember, we have individuality, and it will show in our art. It is unique. The excitement and fulfillment of producing the works that express your soul can not be overestimated. That joy of creation is the key to fulfillment. Art must be unique and then it is original. It is absolutely ok to use reference photos, books, paintings. If you have visions of your paintings, then try to put them on the canvas.
How to look at the ideas about the originality of art that you have now? Analyze if you ideas are making you powerless or powerful. If you feel disappointed and judgemental about your work when you copy a photograph, then investigate further. Where did these ideas come from? Are they true? Drill right into your beliefs.
Most importantly, respect your art and be aware of your inner voices. Do not let them sit inside. You were not born with many of your ideas so you do not have to continue living with them. Complete with them and move on.
